Our History. Carrying on A tradition

The Woodlands breeding program was started in the early 1950's by Sue Randolph Meredith (one of the founders of the VPBA, Virginia Pony Breeders Association). She showed ponies and later horses from the early 1930's to the early 1940's under her maiden name, Sue Bolling. She lived her dream of raising ponies at the Woodlands Farm. Her work is being continued by her son, Bolling Randoph and his wife, Kay.

“I’ve known Kay and Bo since 2006 when I bought my first Woodlands pony. Since then I’ve had 6 other ponies from them. They are wonderful, trustworthy people who breed quality ponies that are both talented and kid friendly. I’d go back to them in a heartbeat for another one next time I’m looking.”

"The decision to follow our trainer's advice and buy a Woodlands pony straight from the farm was the best one we have ever made for our daughter's development as both a junior rider and a horsewoman. By helping train this magical unicorn from groundwork, to poles, to fences, she has learned so much along the way. These ponies are smart, spirited, brave to jump and keen to explore, and above all else, they are kind and love their riders. Together, our daughter and her pony have won many championships, top derby placements and built a great bond on their journey all the way up to PF 2023, in which they placed top ten in the Large Greens reserve champion owner/rider and champion Virginia Bred. We love our sweet mare and couldn't recommend Woodlands Pony Farm more highly!"

"I first spoke with Kay and Bo about acquiring a pony in the early fall of 2009. I had a client looking, so we arranged to have my client stop and try him on their way back from a family vacation. They fell in love with The Woodlands, Kay, Bo and the pony during their two day stay at the farm and a week later the grey medium gelding arrived and they named him Woodlands Stevie Ray, he had never jumped a course, been ridden by a child and had no lead change.

My daughter Kelby and I began working with him. Eighteen months later he took his novice rider to her 1st Pony Finals placing 2nd over fences and third over all in the medium green ponies . He was then sold and went on to win the regular medium pony division 3 times along with many other wins. I tell this story because this emphasizes what Woodlands ponies are all about.

These ponies are bred and handled to not only be top pony hunters that can and will win anywhere, they are also made for children to ride. They are beautiful, safe, kind and most importantly they love to do their job.

I have stayed with Kay and Bo at the farm many times since we acquired our 1st Woodlands pony, since then I have worked with at least 10 of their wonderful ponies. There’s not enough space to convey the hours and hours per day, year after year that both Kay and Bo have dedicated to developing these wonderful ponies. Going to their farm is a magical experience, seeing Kay and Bo out in the fields calling their “babies“ and seeing the ponies all come up and surround them, crowding in, is incredibly moving.

Bo’s intelligent and thoughtful breeding program has brought their ponies to the top of the pony hunter world. The admiration I have for these two people and what they have accomplished with just the two of them doing 95% of the work while also raising 5 children knows no bounds. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to share just how remarkable these two people and their program are!

"We searched all over for three years in order to find the perfect pony for me. My trainer suggested we go to Pony Finals in 2013 to try all of the ponies that would be there throughout the country. We rode ponies left and right until we stumbled upon Woodlands True Love. While she was a nice pony, we were looking for a medium pony instead of a large for me at that point in my life. Her sister, Woodlands Love Story was brought out next and it was as if it was a match made in Heaven. I rode her in a thunderstorm and she didn’t care. The next day I rode her and it was overcast and 75. She was the same pony all the way around. It was the start of what now is our forever love story as she is retired with me at home."
